Mochipet Featured in Freq Magazine Canada!

Try and think of a musician these days who is more endearing than California’s David Wang, aka Mochipet. The man dons a purple dinosaur costume for his performances, has a DJ name which originates from the tiny rice mould animals he used to make with his grandmother, and is generally a cheery, optimistic dude, as evidenced by his actions following his second laptop theft.

While on tour in New Orleans, Mochipet’s laptop was stolen from a show. But, rather than wring his hands or lose his shit, he rallied by posting a 26-track collection on his Daly City Records label website alongside a new tune: “You Can Steal My Laptop But You Can’t Steal My Swing.” This came with a message: “My friend Graz suggested that I put up a page with some of my music in return for donations… so please download and enjoy the music and give what you can. If you can’t give, that’s OK too… I find the best release for something stolen from you is sometimes to give something away.”   READ ON..

Mochipet Featured on Cassette Blog

By now, you surely already have heard that Beastie Boy MCA aka Adam Yauch passed away this past Friday, May 4, 2012, after a long battle with cancer.  This would be a pretty shitty beat blog if we didn’t pause for the man with the beard like a billy goat.  The Beasties will go down in history as legends in hip-hop, and, for our purposes, as some of the greatest innovators of the sample game.  Hell, Paul’s Boutique…. TBT Label Series: Daly City Records

By: Alex Alden

Bay Area DJ/Producer, Mochipet, is known for his loud purple dinosaur suit and dance floor bangers. However the musical maestro has long had his finger in the business side of the industry as well, running his own record label, Daly City Records.

The label’s namesake, Daly City, is the oft forgotten neighbor of colorful San Francisco, CA. Mochipet, or David Wang as he is known sans dino suit, grew up there with his dad. Virtually unknown outside of the Bay Area, Mochipet decided to name the label after the town because he considers Daly City as well as Daly City Records to be his home. In an interview with The Brain Trust, he mentioned that, “It’s great to see people from around the world recognize the name ‘Daly City’ even though they don’t know the city. It’s like building something from scratch and re-appropriating something on a personal level.”

As illustrated through his commitment to home, family is important to Mochipet, and he has brought that commitment to lasting relationships to Daly City Records. All of the artists that have released on the label are in some way personally connected to him and he calls the label “a network of good family and friends.” Due to this emphasis on personal relationships over musical genre, Daly City Records avoids classification.

Mochipet relishes in this fact, saying “I wanted it to be personal and not just another label with a ‘niche’ that spits out the same things over and over again. I love all kinds of music and really wanted Daly City to reflect that.” The artists currently releasing on the label are definitely varied. Some of these up and comers include Living Stone, Th’Mole and Sovereign Sect.

Living Stone is based out of Montreal, Canada and creates deep bassy beats tossed with a dose of dubstep. Reno native Th’Mole puts on a full costumed show and dabbles in different genres but always throws in a splash of humor. His track ‘I love Unicorns’ is a catchy homage to Th’Mole’s love of the mythical animal. Sovereign Sect, hailing from Fargo, ND, is a livetronica group who describe their sound as “as unique as it is diverse.”

As with any modern, digitalized label, Daly City is faced with the threat of internet piracy, but Mochipet isn’t worried about it citing the fact that since his artists are smaller, the people who listen to them are more connected to the music and less likely to steal. “…when your audience doesn’t really care what you are doing and just want to listen to that hit song, that’s where piracy problems come in, because you are trying to make money off of someone who doesn’t connect with your artist on a personal level. It’s like selling McDonalds food. They just want it fast and cheap. They don’t care where they get it from. That’s not what we are trying to do. We can give away our music for free and our fans will still donate or come support at shows. They are interested in what we are doing. “

The aim of Daly City records is “to expose people to awesome music they might have never heard.” Bigger names such as eDIT (Glitch Mob) and Daedelus (Ninja Tune) who have become quite well known have released on Daly City but that was before they made it big and helped gain exposure to a larger audience. Mochipet is not interested in signing a major act and is more focused on the music and keeping the label unique. He says,” Why would I want to make another label of something that’s already out there? I think this is what will set us apart in the long run. I think the labels people remember are the ones that have their own character, one’s that have their own personality.”

Very refreshing to see a label sticking to its ideals in the industry.

MOCHIPET’s LIST OF PRECAUTIONS FOR MUSICIAN’S WITH LAPTOPS:

1) Tracking  Software (these track your laptop in case it is stolen)
– Project Prey (free)    – Lojack  – Apple iCloud (will track your Mac)

2) Always keep a copy of your Serial Number so you can report to police

3) Always report your stolen laptop to the police department. (if you bought your computer with a credit card come companies will give you money back if it is stolen)

When, a few week ago, San Francisco electronic music artist Mochipet’s laptop was stolen during his ongoing Pet Your Godzilla Tour 2012 while in New Orleans he did two things. First, he warned other artists who use their laptops for their music of what precautions to take in
case of a similar theft. This he did by posting online the list that is republished above here. Secondly he set about trying to raise some funds towards purchasing a replacement laptop by going online and seeking donations in exchange for new tracks of his music. The response was even better than anticipated which greatly pleased the artist born David Wangwhose laptop is more than simply a device to send emails and update blogs etc. Rather Mochipet’s laptop is one of his main musical instruments. It is also his mobile recording studio, and where he stores a lot of his music and music on his label, Daly City Records.Hence it is an integral part of his career and life.

Mochipet said that, “My friend Grazsuggested that I put up a page with some of my music in return for donations, so I decided to make a 26 track collection of my work.” This he did and less then a week after he posted this offer, fans rallied and spread the word and ultimately raised enough money to buy him a new MacBook Pro. “I never thought I could raise the money in just less then a week. My hope was to just spread awareness to other musicians and gear being stolen from shows, and on tours,” said Mochipet noting how, “Believe it or not, after everyone takes their cut, we don’t make that much money as an underground artist. Everyone doing this is just doing for the music and when people come and steal your stuff it really puts a negative feeling to the whole purpose of music, which I feel is to uplift people.” Mochipet added that he is still seeking his old laptop and asks anyone (especially in LA area) if they see it (description below) to contact him at mochipet@dalycityrecords.com and for general info visit Daly City Records website.
